Mum’s Birthday
It’s my mum’s birthday soon, on the 24th November and I’ve absolutely no idea what
to get her.
Last year I bought her some perfume, and the year before that a T-shirt with a pink
monkey on it. She liked that.
This year, though, I haven’t a clue. She doesn’t drink or smoke, so I can’t buy her alcohol
or cigarettes. She doesn’t have any hobbies, either. All she does is watch TV all day.
I know! I’ll get her a DVD. One of those old films in black and white with Gregory Peck or
Rock Hudson. She’ll like that!
Questions

1. On what day is the speaker’s mum’s birthday?
2. What did he buy his mum last year?
3. What did he buy his mum two years ago?
4. Does his mum smoke or drink?

Audio 3  December in the UK

December in the UK

It’s cold in December in the UK. It rains a lot and most people go home after work and stay inside their houses where it’s nice and warm.

When they do go out it’s usually to work, to go shopping or perhaps have a drink in the local pub. However, the atmosphere is exciting because it’s nearly Christmas time. People are shopping for presents and making plans for their Christmas holidays.

I read somewhere that the British public spend more money in December than any other time of year. Maybe they spend most of their money on gloves, scarves, coats, boots, hats and heating bills to keep them warm!

Questions
1)   What is the weather like in the UK?
2)   Why is December an exciting month?
3)   What do the people usually buy in December?

Audio 4

Script

I walked out of the house and closed the door. It was Sunday and there was no one in the street. There was silence. Slowly, I walked  across the road and got into my blue sports car.
It was December but I felt very hot. I looked at the house. It was quiet and very normal. It was exactly same as all the other houses in the street. Except that the door was yellow and, inside the house,  a young woman was lying dead on the kitchen floor. Carefully, I put the knife under the seat. Then, I looked into the car mirror, smiled at myself and drove away.
Questions:
1)      What day of the week was it?
2)      What kind of car did the girl have?
3)      Which month of the year was it?
